The Bangalore City Police (BCP) is the law enforcement agency in Bangalore City under Karnataka Police. Ensuring the safety of its residents is a core priority for the City Police. If you are a resident of Bangalore facing an emergency, or unlawful situation, or need to report a crime, it’s important to understand the processes of filing a police complaint and a First Information Report (FIR).

An FIR is a formal document lodged with the police detailing the circumstances and essential facts of a cognizable offence (more serious crimes like theft, assault, etc.). Filing an FIR will help the police to investigate and take legal action.

Administrative Structure

To serve the public efficiently, the Bangalore City Police follows a well-defined structure:

  • Commissioner of Police (CP): The head of Bangalore City Police (including city police headquarters, departments, and all other administrative/field offices), who is assisted by the Joint/Deputy/Assistant Commissioners, Police Inspectors, and other rank officers.
  • Field Divisions: The city is divided into zones (East, West, North, South, Central, Whitefield), each headed by Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP). Zones are further divided into Divisions, each headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and sub-divided into police stations controlled by a Police Inspector.
  • Specialized Departments: Law and order, traffic, crime, cyber crime, intelligence, special branch, city armed reserve, women and children, and others.

Besides law enforcement, Bangalore Police provide various citizen-centric online services, such as e-lost report applications, passport seva, police verification certificates, arms online applications, and others. These can be accessed through the Seva-Sindhu portal of the Govt of Karnataka.

Bangalore Police Helpline Numbers

The BCP has several helpline numbers for the citizens of Bangalore to contact in case of emergency or grievance. The main emergency numbers are 100 and 112 (ERSS), which can be used for any assistance. Other police helpline numbers are:

For any complaints related to cybercrimes or online financial frauds, register a complaint by calling at the toll-free cyber police helpline number 1930 or report online through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

How to File a Complaint or e-FIR?

The citizens of Bangalore can register an online FIR or complaint for certain types of offences, such as vehicle theft, lost property, missing persons, and others. To register an online FIR or complaint, follow these steps:

  • Visiting a Police Station: Locate your nearest police station and directly lodge your complaint with the authorities. An FIR will be registered for cognizable offenses and it can be only reported at any police station as in-person.
  • Online Registration: You can file an online e-FIR to Karnataka Police through its citizen portal by selecting Bangalore City and the local police station under the jurisdiction of the city police.

If you are writing an FIR on plain paper, must provide your name as a complainant, communication details (contact number and address), description of the incident with location, time, and date, details of the accused, and other accurate details in your complaint/FIR application.

After the successful submission of an FIR or a written police complaint, collect your copy of the complaint/FIR with an acknowledgement from the police (free of cost). Further, follow up on your case by knowing the status, particularly with an FIR.

Please note: If your cases or complaints are not resolved to your satisfaction or have complaints regarding the functioning (corruption/harassment/misuse of power) of the Bangalore City Police, lodge a public grievance to the Appellate Authority of Karatnaka Police Department through “Janaspandana – Integrated Public Grievance Redressal System (IPGRS)” of Karnataka Government.

  • Women’s Safety: A continuous priority with more visible policing, safety initiatives, and speedy prosecution in cases of violence against women.
